Perfectly Packed: Paris

Perfectly Packed: Paris

Does anything sound sweeter than Paris in the spring? I'm traveling to the city of love with my mama in May and our trip is just around the corner. I wanted to share my packing plan since I'm only taking a carry-on! Paris is known for fashion so of course I wanted to cram my whole closet in, but for 6 days a small bag is totally doable. I also want to prove that you don't have to be a fashion girl or have expensive designer clothes to look chic and put together (aka NOT touristy) in Paris! Read on for my essentials list!

The perk of packing in a carry-on is always the minimized risk of your luggage not coming with you. I've had my checked luggage catch up to me days into a trip, after having to buy some essentials at the airport...not fun! If I'm only traveling for a week, I normally opt to pare down as much as possible so that I can go this route and be stress free.

My number one rule when packing this way is to wear your heaviest and coziest items on the plane, for two reasons - to keep the bag weight down (you don't want to be over the limit!) and to stay warm. Why are planes always freezing?? If you take a look at the list above, I'm wearing my "warm" jacket (in my case a big cozy cocoon sweater) and my sneakers on the plane, meaning I only have to pack two jackets and one pair of shoes.

1. Always always check the weather. Even if you've been somewhere before - you could be caught in unexpected rain, or who knows what! My bag is always subject to change even up to the day I leave. Paris can be drizzly in the spring so I'm mixing light dresses with sweaters to add some warmth. And even though I love my white sneakers, if it looks like a lot of rain I'll trade for a darker shoe so that I don't trash these ones.

2. Check out what the locals are wearing. Paris is a big city with a lot of fashionable women, so it's easy to scope out outfit inspiration. However - I don't believe in buying a whole new wardrobe just for vacation. I pull pieces I already have that fit the vibe of the place and treat myself to only one or two new items. In this case, I purchased a trench since I didn't have one, and it will also come in handy when I get back to gloomy San Francisco. I don't live in France, so I can't be expected to have that perfect je ne sais quoi style!

3. Take shoes that are broken in. Seriously can't stress this one enough - you always end up walking a lot when exploring a new place, even if you don't plan on doing a lot of physical activity. I've made the mistake of wearing my cute new shoes and getting massive blisters while traipsing around.

4. Don't forget a hat! I also usually wear this on the plane, since I don't want it to get crushed. It's always good to have extra sun protection and helps elevate an outfit, especially if you're re-wearing an item - it will be a whole new look!

5. Always bring something warm. Even if you're going to the tropics. I'll never forget my trip to Costa Rica in the summer, when I assumed I'd be living in shorts and a tank top. Come to find out, seeing monkeys at higher elevations was a freezing experience! I had a sweatshirt I had worn on the plane that saved my butt.
